Re-Home Unwanted Goods

Below is a list of avenues and opportunities for unloading items you no longer need but are in good condition and someone else can reuse. Donating pre-loved items to charities or selling/giving directly to others in your neighborhood is an excellent way to divert useful objects, clothing and bulky stuff from a landfill. Several local charities accept a wide variety of goods for resale in their thrift stores or use by clients. Please double-check by calling to confirm that they can take in what you wish to donate. Some offer pick-up service.

Junk Rescue and College H.U.N.K.S. will pick up household goods and large items and donate them to local donation centers.

Bicycles

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County Bike Exchange is a volunteer-led enterprise that repairs donated bicycles and sells them at modest prices at its Ewing location at Capitol Plaza, raising funds for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mercer County and promoting biking for transportation and pleasure among low-income families. Proceeds from the Bike Exchange sponsor the Club’s after-school programs. Bikes can be donated at the Bike Exchange and several local stores:

Pedals for Progress rescues bicycles destined for overburdened U.S. landfills and ship them to developing countries where they are sorely needed and highly valued. Note: Pedals for Progress also collects sewing machines.

Clothing, Other Textiles and Shoes

Hopewell Valley CHS organizes a year-round textile collection in partnership with Law Enforcement Against Drugs (L.E.A.D) and Turnkey Enterprises. Donations support the L.E.A.D. curriculum in HVRSD schools. A used clothing donation bin is located in Solar Lot at the high school. The following items are acceptable: clothing, shoes, sneakers, belts, purses, blankets, sheets, drapes, pillow cases and stuffed animals. Not acceptable: rags, pillows, scraps of fabric, toys or other household items.

Rescue Mission of Trenton provides donation boxes around Mercer County (see list on website) including Rosedale Town & Country at 101 Route 31 N. in Pennington

Eastern Service Workers Association accepts donations of clothing at 6 West End Ave. in Trenton: (609) 695-9562

The Bra Recyclers has a mail-in program and there are several lingerie stores in NJ which accept drop-offs

Craft & Art Materials

HomeFront accepts unopened/unused or partially-used art materials with substantial creative potential remaining are being collected for their therapeutic ArtSpace program. The top priority items: paint brushes (all sizes), acrylic paint, canvases, acrylic painting paper, watercolor paper, cardstock (black, white and assorted colors), craft glue guns & glue sticks, paint pens, gel pens Sharpies, Crayola Model Magic & clay, linoleum blocks & carving tools, coloring books (children & adult), word search & crossword books. Limited quantities of other art supplies may also be accepted. Drop them off at Treasure Trove thrift store at 31 West Broad St. in Hopewell Borough, or bring to a HV Green Team collection event at local farmers markets in the summer.

Eyeglasses and Sunglasses

All types of used eyeglasses and sunglasses, prescription and non-prescription, for children and adults are accepted by the New Jersey Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center. Local collection boxes (“yellow mail bin”) can be found at:

• Hopewell Township Library, 245 Pennington-Titusville Rd. in Pennington
• Outside Michael’s Deli & Bakery on East Broad St. in Hopewell Borough

Medical Equipment

Used medical equipment, such as canes, bath chairs, walkers, wheelchairs, ramps, and tray tables can be donated to Goodwill Home Medical Equipment in Bellmawr (or at any Goodwill Store or Donation Center in the NJ & Philadelphia Region).
